Tallaght’s rugby season came to an end with a heavy defeat away to Blackrock in the Winters Cup.  Due to injuries and players being unavailable, Tallaght were forced to field an unusual looking team with no fewer than six front rowers spread throughout the pack (four props and two hookers) and regular number eight Mick O’Dea lining out at inside centre.

It was always going to be a tough days work and Blackrock quickly got into gear with two early tries to lead 12-0.  To their credit though, Tallaght rallied and earned two penalties, which Danny Behan converted to pull the score back to 12-6.  They were aided by Blackrock’s ill discipline as constant chatter to the referee saw their out-half first sin-binned and then red-carded.  Despite their numerical disadvantage Blackrock scored two more tries, one of which was converted.  Behan kicked two more penalties for Tallaght to leave the half-time score at 24-12 to Blackrock.

In the second half Blackrock cut loose, scoring six more tries.  Tallaght weren’t helped by the sin-binnings of Colin Malone and Mick O’Dea in quick succession.  Tallaght’s discipline has become a problem this season, with eight yellow cards as opposed to one last season.  The majority of these have come from talking back to the ref.  You can’t control most things in a rugby match, but you can control what comes out of your mouth.  In short, Tallaght need to learn to button it!

Blackrock converted four of their second half tries to make the final score 62-12.  It was a disappointing way to end the season, but the three league wins this year were an improvement on last season.  Hopefully, with more players interested in joining next season, the future is bright.
