ST. MARYS ‘B’ R.F.C. 16
Try: Andy Doran, Sean Gilheaney
Penalties: Dave Daly 2
Leinster League J4
14/01/12 Tymon Park
Tallaght took on local rivals St. Marys in the J4 league in Tymon Park. In their meeting earlier in the season, Marys had beaten Tallaght 44-3. So Tallaght were determined not to suffer such a heavy defeat at home. Tallaght began well, playing simple but effective rugby attacking through the pack. They were scrummaging well too with young prop Adam Greene having a fine game.
Both teams had kicks at goal in the first half but they both fell wide so it remained scoreless at half time. Marys needed a win to go to the top of the table so they came out firing in the second half. Within two minutes, Marys had their first try when they outflanked the Tallaght defence and Andy Doran scored in the corner. Dave Daly missed the conversion but made amends shortly afterwards by slotting a penalty to make it 8-0 to Marys.
It wasn’t long before Marys crossed the line again and this time it was Sean Gilheaney’s turn to score in the corner. Daly missed the conversion again but with 13 points in ten minutes, it looked like Marys would run away with the game. However Tallaght regained their footing in the game. Second row Mark Gaynor was making big yardage with his carries and flanker Neil Kelly was a real menace at the breakdown. Tony McManus captained the team and led from the front playing first at prop, then hooker before finishing at number eight. Colm O’Reilly was playing his first ever game at scrum-half and did well.
Tallaght kept plugging away and despite being under pressure they limited Marys to only one more Daly penalty which left the final score 16-0. St. Marys were deserved winners but they knew they had been in a game. Their win moved them to the top of the table although Railway Union are two points behind with a game in hand. Tallaght were disappointed not to get a score on the board but there was a lot to be positive about and it was a performance that they can build on for the rest of the season.
