Tallaght hosted high-flying Blackrock at the Postal Club at Kitipper. Wing Darran Kearney scored his first try for Tallaght in the first half. However, this was the highlight for the home team as Blackrock ran in four tries, three of which were converted for a half-time lead of 26-5.
It looked like Tallaght were in line for another heavy beating but then they launched a superb second half comeback. First newcomer Conor McGill intercepted a pass in his own twenty two and ran it the length of the pitch to score. Then McGill made another break to set up centre Trevor Byrne for a try. The forwards didn’t want to be outdone and after a series of drives, Jack Russell smashed over for a try.
Out-half Danny Behan converted two of the tries and added on a penalty and remarkably Tallaght had clawed back a twenty one point deficit to lead 27-26 with only ten minutes to go. The finest result in their history was within their grasp but it was sadly not to be. Blackrock recovered their composure against a tiring Tallaght team and scored two late tries to run out 38-27 winners.
It was a huge disappointment for Tallaght but they deserve huge credit for the second-half comeback.
